My AC unit went caput in the middle of a miserable, scorching, humid, Florida summer and it was a very rough experience to say the least.

I’ve been through a lot of the common issues with our AC system: a faulty compressor here, a replaced condenser coil there, even a finicky fan motor.

All of it multiplied in intensity by a very unhappy wife who does NOT like being hot. She’s virtually always the first to notice that the thermostat is saying one thing, but the air temp is telling her something entirely different.

So what’s the deal?

What’s going on when your thermostat says it’s in “cool” mode, but there’s no cool air coming out?

When your thermostat displays “cool” but no cool air is blowing, it could be a power issue from a tripped breaker or blown fuse, a refrigerant leak, or airflow restriction due to a dirty filter. Faulty thermostat batteries, obstructions in the indoor or outdoor AC units, and the unit being in “delay mode” could also be the culprits.

So what do you do? Where do you begin?

For me, it was a saga of troubleshooting and replacements, each experience more enlightening than the last.
